Wool, Cashmere and Mohair Guide

Choosing knitwear is about more than finding the softest fibre. Consider how you will layer the piece, the texture you like and the maintenance it needs. The yarn, blend and knit construction all affect the result.

What is the difference?

Fibre What it is What to check
Wool A fibre from sheep. Merino is a type of sheep's wool. Fine or chunky knit, fabric weight, feel against the skin and composition.
Cashmere The fine undercoat fibre of cashmere-producing goats. Cashmere percentage, knit density, thickness and whether the shape suits layering.
Mohair A fibre from Angora goats, distinct from angora rabbit fibre. Brushed or smoother finish, blend percentages, openness of the knit and texture against the skin.

Cashmere is often chosen for a soft touch; mohair is often used for an airy, textured surface. Neither name guarantees the feel of every garment. Compare the actual piece, especially if your skin is sensitive to textured yarns.

Which should you choose?

  • For layering: look for a finer knit that sits comfortably under a jacket, and check sleeve and shoulder bulk.
  • For a textured statement: consider a brushed or open knit, then check whether you want to wear a camisole or shirt underneath.
  • For a substantial jumper: compare thickness and construction rather than assuming one fibre will always be warmer.
  • For everyday use: consider how the piece will wear with your coat, bag strap and usual care routine.

Read blends and care labels

A blend may include wool, cashmere, mohair, cotton or synthetic fibres. Read the full percentages instead of judging from the product title alone. No fibre is universally pill-free; do not pull loose pills from a delicate knit.

Follow the garment's care label. Machine washing is appropriate only when permitted; when washing is allowed, use the stated gentle method and dry as directed. See our clothing care guide.
