Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette - What's the Difference?

Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette - What's the Difference?

When shopping for a luxury fragrance, you'll often encounter the terms Eau de Parfum (EDP) and Eau de Toilette (EDT). While they may seem interchangeable, the difference between them is significant - and understanding it will help you choose the right scent for every occasion.

What Is Eau de Parfum?

Eau de Parfum contains a higher concentration of fragrance oils - typically between 15% and 20%. This means:

  • A richer, more intense scent
  • Longer lasting - usually 6 to 8 hours or more
  • Fewer applications needed throughout the day
  • A deeper, more complex fragrance evolution on the skin

Eau de Parfum is ideal for evening wear, special occasions, or anyone who prefers a bold, lasting impression.

What Is Eau de Toilette?

Eau de Toilette has a lower concentration of fragrance oils - typically between 5% and 15%. This results in:

  • A lighter, fresher scent
  • Shorter longevity - usually 3 to 5 hours
  • A more subtle, everyday presence
  • Often a brighter, more citrus-forward opening

Eau de Toilette is perfect for daytime wear, warmer months, or those who prefer a more understated fragrance experience.

Which Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your lifestyle, the occasion, and your personal preference:

  • Choose EDP if you want longevity, depth, and a fragrance that evolves throughout the day
  • Choose EDT if you prefer something lighter, fresher, and more versatile for daily wear
  • Consider the season - EDT tends to feel more comfortable in heat, while EDP shines in cooler months
  • Consider the occasion - EDP for evenings and events, EDT for the office or casual days

A Note on Concentration

Beyond EDP and EDT, you may also encounter:

  • Parfum (Extrait de Parfum) - the most concentrated form, 20–40% fragrance oils, exceptional longevity
  • Eau de Cologne (EDC) - lighter than EDT, typically 2–5% concentration, very fresh and fleeting
  • Eau Fraîche - the lightest of all, under 3% concentration
