Silk Guide

Silk: The Timeless Fabric of Elegance

Silk has been associated with luxury for more than five thousand years.

Its remarkable strength, softness, and natural sheen have made it one of the most prized fabrics in the history of fashion.

How Silk Is Produced

Silk originates from the Bombyx mori silkworm, which spins a long continuous filament to create its cocoon.

Each filament can measure more than one kilometer in length, making silk one of the strongest natural fibers relative to its weight.

These threads are carefully reeled and woven into the fabrics used for luxury garments.

Types of Silk Fabrics

Mulberry Silk
The smoothest and most refined type of silk.

Tussar Silk
A wild silk known for its natural golden tone.

Dupioni Silk
Characterized by small irregular slubs.

Charmeuse Silk
A satin weave that produces a flowing, glossy finish.

Chiffon and Organza
Lightweight, transparent fabrics often used for layering.

The Natural Behavior of Silk

Silk responds to its environment more than most fabrics.

It may wrinkle slightly or soften with wear. These characteristics reflect the natural structure of the fiber.

Caring for Silk

Silk garments should be treated carefully.

Recommended care includes:

  • Washing only when labeled washable

  • Using cold water and mild detergent

  • Avoiding twisting or wringing

  • Drying flat or on padded hangers

Many luxury silk garments are best maintained through professional dry cleaning.
